Red Deer
Cervus elaphus
I am one of the largest deer species in the world, and I can be recognized by my reddish-brown coat and, if I’m a male, my large branching antlers. I shed and regrow my antlers every year. I am a social animal and live in herds. During the breeding season, called the rut, I make loud roaring calls to attract females and challenge rival males.

Habitat
I live in woodlands, grasslands, moorlands, and forest edges across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa. I like areas with open spaces to graze and sheltered woodlands where I can rest and stay safe.
Visitor guidelines
Please keep a respectful distance from me, as I can be easily startled. Avoid loud noises, running, or sudden movements near my enclosure. Do not feed me or throw food into my space. I, especially if I’m a male during the rut, may behave unpredictably. Follow all instructions from the zoo staff so everyone can watch me safely.
