Lama glama
I am a gentle and intelligent South American camelid, known for my long neck, soft wool, and calm temperament. I have been domesticated for thousands of years and used as a pack animal, and my fiber is highly valued. I am social and live in herds, communicating with soft humming sounds and expressive ear and tail movements.

- I communicate by humming and using my ears and tail to show my mood.
- I can carry 25–30% of my body weight and was traditionally used as a pack animal in the Andes.
- My wool is soft, warm, and lanolin-free, which makes it ideal for people with wool allergies.
- I am closely related to alpacas, guanacos, and vicuñas.
- I may spit when I feel threatened or to settle disputes within my herd.
Habitat & food
Habitat
I live in high-altitude grasslands, valleys, and mountains of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. I’m well adapted to cold climates and rugged terrain.
Visitor guidelines
Please do not try to feed or touch me, as sudden movements may startle me. Avoid standing too close to the fence with food in your hands, because I might reach toward it. Stay calm and quiet, and always follow zoo staff instructions so everyone can watch me safely and enjoyably.
